Lines of Life, 2023

Lines of Life is an interactive installation consisting of a ficus plant equipped with a proximity sensor capable of detecting the distance of the viewer. This data is translated, through Arduino and Processing, into concentric lines projected onto the wall: the same rings that naturally form inside the trunks of trees over the years.

The lines, generated through the proximity relationship between the human body and the plant, are thus made visible and brought to the outside, in a process that reverses what normally remains hidden beneath the bark.

The work reflects on the relationship between humans and nature, which is often unbalanced in favor of exploiting the resources provided by plants. Through the lines generated by the distance between the human body and the plant, humans are once again made to feel responsible for the life of the tree. Technology thus places itself at the service of the environment, giving form to a new mode of communication between nature and humans.
